The Joys Of Scale & Materials

.
Big metal prints made at Blazing Editions make a significant contribution to my exhibit Landscapes Within Landscapes at Sordoni Art Gallery. The two above are 40×60” and given the space, could go even bigger. The same prints are huge in my New England farmhouse.
.
There’s the size that feels good for the space and the size that feels good for the image. Some images change at different sizes; sometimes better, sometimes worse, sometimes just different. There’s an art to finding a compelling balance. I think of David Byrne’s TED talk How Architecture Helped Music Evolve.

Many metal prints are on display in my exhibit Landscapes Within Landscapes at Sordoni Art Gallery through May 13.

I don’t tend to use high gloss materials as often they feel synthetic, and I’m making images of the natural world. I chose to make a limited number of prints in this high gloss material because the way it reflects light brings a compelling quality to certain images. Having tried all the other surfaces, I decided to look past the reflections and savor that light. Then something unexpected happened. Looking at my reflection, I saw myself moving inside my landscapes. Sometimes my viewers see themselves inside my landscapes too. This unexpected union is exciting.
.

I wrote a poem about this for the exhibit and catalog – Looking At My Landscape.
.

You can listen to me read it and other poems in the catalog here.
